Question 3 B

b. What was the most challenging aspect of applying the F-Pattern and Plain English writing principles? How did you overcome it? (5 Marks)

The biggest challenge when writing in plain english for the F-pattern is being aware of whether or not the content I am writing is important. I wanted to keep the most important information that I wanted the viewers to see at the beginning of my intro. This can be difficult to pinpoint what is important because as a business owner it can be easy to fall in a biased mindset of “everything I offer is important”. When in fact this is not true. I wanted to really focus on what my audience would be interested in learning when looking at my site. I took out all the other services I offered in the other intro because I don’t think it would have been clear and concise what my company does if I left those in.

I overcame this challenge through writing down bullet points of what was most important. Then I structured my layout accordingly. I kept some information from my past intro page to back up some claims about legitimacy. Once the whole layout was finished and written, I adjusted the ‘scanability’ of my intro. I’ll explain this in further detail for question 4.

Overall, when writing for the f-pattern. It is important to keep in mind the way that readers interact with worded content online. We want to keep that inverted pyramid in a way that will show the most important information right away.
